Meet Joana
The Founder of Sage Home Harmony
Joana shares her insights, experiences, and the philosophy that shapes Sage Home Harmony.
Q: What sparked your interest in home organization?
Joana: Well, it wasn’t easy to leave a 25-year career in sales, but there was something so satisfying about the idea of organizing and transforming spaces. Watching The Home Edit was also a turning point for me — it validated my passion and showed me people can actually have a career helping others bring order to chaos. From that point on, I was sold!
Q: Was there a specific moment that made you go, “Yep, this is what I want to do”?
Joana: The stress of my previous job and the desire for control over my life were huge factors. Staring at spreadsheets 8-10 hours a day was really bad for my health. I wanted to do something more fulfilling that didn’t require me to sit at a desk for long stretches of time. More than anything, I wanted to contribute to something more meaningful than corporate profits.
Q: How do sustainability and your personal values influence Sage Home Harmony?
Joana: I was deeply influenced by a parent who grew up during the Great Depression. That’s where I learned the value of sustainability and repurposing. Whether it’s secondhand shopping or looking for alternatives to disposable products, sustainability is really important to what I do.
Q: What do you find most rewarding about your work?
Joana: There's nothing quite like the smile on a client's face when they see a chaotic room transformed into a functional, easy-to-navigate space. I love helping people solve problems, save time, and — ultimately — save money. I’m also obsessed with finding creative ways to make challenging spaces work.
Q: How do you tailor your projects to meet client needs?
Joana: I ask a LOT of questions and conduct thorough walkthroughs of each space. When I take a look at a client’s location and style, I get insight into what they do and don’t love and this guides my approach to each project.
Q: Can you share a memorable project or client story?
Joana: I was recently brought in to organize a large pantry. The client was unaware how many expired items they had and ultimately how much money that translated to in food waste. During another pantry project, I gave the client’s child some additional independence by placing snacks and food at his eye level. Now he knew what “approved” foods he had access to and didn’t have to repeatedly ask his mom to get them. Little changes like these can have a large positive impact on the folks I work with.
Q: How does your interest in antiques complement your work with Sage Home Harmony?
Joana: My love for antiques ties directly to my philosophy of reusing and repurposing. I have a passion for saving beautiful, well-made furniture from landfills. Whether I’m giving a piece a new life or integrating it into a client's home, it's another layer of sustainability that I practice.
Q: What advice do you offer clients struggling with sentimental clutter?
Joana: I pay close attention to a client’s body language and emotional cues to get a feel for what they truly hold valuable. For items that are hard to let go of, I suggest repurposing or reimagining their use.
A friend of mine died a few years ago and his wife held on to his shirts because they meant so much to her. She didn’t want to let them go but she also knew she couldn't keep them forever. For Christmas, she had some of the shirts turned into quilts for their sons. It’s solutions like these that can help cut down on the amount of “stuff” someone has without them being forced to donate or toss sentimental items out.
Q: Have you noticed a transformation in your own life since starting Sage Home Harmony?
Joana: Definitely! I've tackled my garage, making everything accessible without the hassle. I've streamlined my closet, donating clothes I no longer wear, which has been incredibly freeing. Now, I live by the rule: if it doesn't fit in the container, it's time to let it go. This mindset has saved me from unnecessary stress.
Honestly, looking back, I wish I'd had someone to help me organize when I moved years ago — living with untouched boxes for so long was a huge burden. Starting Sage Home Harmony has truly transformed not just my physical space, but my approach to life.
